Increasing numbers of care homes and home care agencies could be driven out of business because councils can no longer pay them the rates they need to operate, the leader of adult social services chiefs in England has warned.
David Pearson, president of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (Adass), said the system of care for elderly and disabled people is becoming “unsustainable” in many parts of the country as a result of a combination of funding cuts and demographic pressures.
He said that many care chiefs now fear they will no longer be able to balance the books next year, just as the Coalition’s long-awaited reforms of the system come into force, giving people new rights but also heaping extra pressure on councils.
