Greater use of food banks linked to welfare cuts

The growth in the number and use of food banks across the UK is linked to cuts in spending on local services, welfare benefits and higher unemployment, say researchers in an analysis* published today in The BMJ.

Increased use of food banks is also likely to mean growing numbers of GPs being asked by patients for a referral to these non-profit, charitable organisations that distribute food to people who have difficulty purchasing enough food to avoid hunger.

The number of local authorities with food banks operated by the Trussell Trust, a non-governmental organisation that coordinates food banks across the UK, rose from 29 in 2009-10 to 251 in 2013-14.

More food banks are opening in areas experiencing greater cuts in spending on local services and central welfare benefits and higher unemployment rates. The rise in food bank use is also concentrated in communities where more people are experiencing benefit sanctions.

the solution stares each government but they still refuse to deal with it. the problem is simple stop those coming to this country grabbing everything benefit under the sun they can get hold of off.

if you can't afford to look after your own born and bred then don't dish it to those abroad and coming here. Twisted Evil

Conservatives have just launched their manifesto but it is a manifesto for working people, shouldn't a political party be for everyone not just for one catergory?

In all my life have i ever known 3 political parties in this country treat people in such an appalling and shite fashion if they fall outside the working category.

If they didn't treat people in such a poor fashion we would not need the use of food banks, it is these parties who in their own acts are creating this situation through poor pay, sanctions and zero hours.

if you are forced in to no income then there is no choice but to seek help from these charities.
