Vaginal mesh operations should be banned, says NICE

The health watchdog NICE is to recommend that vaginal mesh operations should be banned from treating organ prolapse in England, the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire show has learned.

Draft guidelines from NICE say the implants should only be used for research - and not routine operations.

Some implants can cut into the vagina and women have been left in permanent pain, unable to walk, work or have sex.

One expert said it is highly likely the NHS will take up the recommendation.

However, the organisation...

Cervical cancer jab women will 'only need three smears'

Women vaccinated against human papilloma virus (HPV) - thought to cause about 99% of cervical cancers - may only need three smear tests in their lifetime, a new study suggests.

Since 2008, the HPV vaccine has been offered to girls aged 11 to 13.

Reported cases of HPV have fallen sharply since then.

A team from Queen Mary University of London found that screenings at age 30, 40 and 55 would offer the same benefit to these young women as the current 12.

The number of cases of gonorrhoea in Australia has soared by 63% in the past five years, a new study has found.
Australian researchers say the rise in gonorrhoea diagnoses was led by an increase in infection in young heterosexual city dwellers.

However the reasons for the dramatic increase are unclear, researchers say.

Changes in sexual behaviour or a particular strain of the infection could be behind the rise, researchers told AAP.
Gonorrhoea can infect the genitals, rectum and throat, and is treatable with antibiotics.

New blood test improves prostate cancer screening

have your say by registering with us.

Researchers from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have developed a new blood test for prostate cancer, which they claim is more reliable and better at detecting aggressive cancer than PSA, the test usually performed.

According to the scientists, the new test, which has been tried on some 60,000 men, detects aggressive cancer earlier and reduces the number of false positives and unnecessary biopsies.

Hans Gustafson took part in the trial,...

Prostate cancer treatment time 'could be halved' with more intense radiotherapy

New procedure could reduce the number of hospital visits per year by more than 150,000, say scientists.

The time it takes to treat prostate cancer could be cut in half after study shows men can handle higher doses of radiotherapy.

The new procedure involves applying higher doses of accurately targeted radiation over a shorter period of 20 days.

Currently, radiotherapy for prostate cancer is spread over 37 days with lower doses.

there are many who suffer with this condition what is it and what can you do?

Post-micturition dribble or ‘after dribble’ is the leaking ofurine after voiding. The urine that leaks after urination islocated in the urethra, between the penile urethra and bladder.

Normally the bulbospongosus muscle, part of the pelvic floor muscles, contracts at the end of urination to expel the urine which has pooled in this part of the urethra. When this muscle has been weakened, it does not contract properly and the urine is expelled at a latter point.

The muscles can be weakened...

I know this is a touchy subject but I was hoping for some feedback. Has anyone here used a bidet before? I was always in the no club. You know the club of no way, never going to happen. I quickly changed my mind after purchasing one and I was wondering if anyone here might have some questions that I could help answer if you are thinking about getting one. Very Happy

Women are 'mistaking the signs of #bladder cancer for cystitis', experts warn

Women are at greater risk of dying from bladder cancer because it is easy to dismiss the signs and symptoms of the disease as a simple urine infection, experts have warned.

New research has revealed female patients are more likely to be diagnosed with the most advanced stage of the disease.

In addition, women are more susceptible to rarer forms of the disease.
